Emily’s Eight Pointers to Maximize the CCX Experience
  1. Look it up. Seven industry “clusters” will be represented at the Expo — do some research on your areas of interest — look up roles, firms, and industry news to get a foundation for your conversations.
  2.  Bring notes, take notes. As you research, jot down a few tidbits that stand out to reference during your conversations. And, you’ll want to jot down a few more tidbits while you chat.
  3. Say “Hi!” Nerves are nerving, but these pros were all college students once, too. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself with a brief synopsis of ‘you’ — your interests, major, passions, goals.
  4. Be curious. Ask thoughtful questions about the topics important to you. What is their best advice for a student in your position? What is changing in their field? How do they use creativity in their role?
  5. Close the deal but keep the door open. Ask for a business card, email address, or other way to keep in touch, then do it (see #7)
  6. Say thanks. Always, always send a note of appreciation to the people who shared their time and knowledge with you — this seemingly small gesture will be appreciated and remembered.
  7. Keep in touch. There are months — even years — between this conversation and the time you may need an internship or job. Do your best to keep in touch with your new connection by requesting informal coffee chats and sharing relevant updates in between.
  8. Chat with your coach. Schedule a career coaching appointment post-Expo to debrief and determine next steps to ensure your time and efforts are used strategically!
