Career Prep Series: What Recruiters Mean When They Say “Strong Technical Fundamentals”

Welcome back to the world of career prep through the eyes of a fellow student!

If you’ve spent time at career fairs, info session, or coffee chats, you have most likely heard this phrase:“We’re looking for candidates with strong technical fundamentals.”

I have heard this phrase many times and just like you…had no idea what that meant. Recruiters and associates at a firm say it like it’s something you should understand, yet it is rarely explained. When I first heard it, I felt behind. I assumed it meant being advanced or being fluent in a long list of tools and coding languages.

However, after some of my internships, I realized recruiters mean something far more practical. 

They are not asking whether you know everything. They are trying to understand whether your foundation is solid.

Strong technical fundamentals refer to your comfort with core building blocks in your career of choice. For more technical roles, it could mean understanding problem solving approaches, basic algorithms, system behavior or quantitative reasoning. It is less about memorizing information about every major coding language and more about whether you understand how things work.

These fundamentals also show up in how you think. When you are given an unfamiliar problem, can you break it down logically? Can you explain your reasoning? Can you make progress even if you do not immediately know the answer? Recruiters and interviews always care more about learning how you think instead of every perfect technical detail recall.

One misconception is that technical fundamentals require previous completion of complex projects or mastery of a breadth of coding languages. The truth is that reality, depth and clarity hold a higher weight than breadth. Companies would prefer to recruit students who understand core concepts AND can reason through challenges. These individuals stand out more compared to someone who has touched many tools without a proficient understanding. 

The underclassmen at WashU will actually find this information to be reassuring. Building fundamentals does not require anything exotic. It means to dedicate yourself to classes, practice solving problems, and work on understanding the material instead of merely completing assignments. This process will pay off heavily during interviews.

At the end of the day, when recruiters mention strong technical fundamentals, they are often asking a simple question: Does this student have the foundation and thinking skills to succeed and keep learning?
