State and local government is a great way to get a sense for how governments function and interact with their citizenry. It’s also a great way to have an immediate and tangible impact on policy! Gaining exposure to cities, counties, municipalities or state governments offers an up-close look at the issues facing our country more broadly. And, these opportunities exist everywhere.
In St. Louis
St. Louis has a dizzying array of governments! There are over 40 municipalities in the region. This means a wealth of mayors, city managers, urban planners, school boards and parks administrators to consult with and work for. Here are a few places that WashU students have found to offer interesting work:
State Government
Working for state representatives and senators is a great way to get familiar with the legislative process. These offices tend to be under-staffed, so there’s an opportunity to contribute substantively in a way that you wouldn’t on The Hill. Also, it’s where many aspiring politicians get their start!
