There is no winning. There is no race.

As you contemplate life after WashU, here are a few considerations to shape your perspective.

Your next step is just that: your next step. Nothing you do directly after WashU is going to make or break the rest of your life. Your “career” is not one decision; it’s a series of decisions over time. Start with what feels right, and learn as you go. From each step you will learn more about yourself and the world. And that will inform the step after that. In a lot of ways, the next few years represent the beginning of a new education – an education in how to apply your skills and knowledge practically, how to listen to your gut, and how to feel confident about your strengths and decision-making abilities.

Now is the time to stop comparing yourself with friends. You are on different paths, with different values, goals, circumstances, and passions. And (maybe for the first time) nobody will be giving grades or ranking you. Life from here on out is not a zero sum situation. So, find inspiration in a friend’s networking prowess, identify an accountability partner to hold you to your goals, learn about how hiring happens (and when) for the industry or roles that interest you, or chat with mentors about grad programs. But aim to only measure yourself in relation to your progress on personal goals. Comparison with others will rob you of joy.

Help is available. We’re here to support you. We care and want to help you find opportunities and make decisions, so take advantage of all we have to offer. And don’t stop with us; you probably have mentors and coaches all over campus and in many parts of your life. Make these people your personal advisory board.

You’ll feel good when you find the sweet spot between enjoying this year and preparing for next. We’re here to help you consider options, break big goals into manageable steps, and pivot as you learn more. Schedule an appointment with someone whose specialties or availability match your needs and interests. We also offer drop-in advising in-person (DUC 110) for online quick questions or document feedback.

You have so much going for you. You can do this; we can help.
