Tips for Attending Employer Programs & Events

Interacting with employers is key to narrowing down your interests and learning about opportunities. Career Fairs, Treks, speakers, panels and employer spotlights give you a chance to hear from people who are doing the work. These programs not only make options more clear and concrete, but increase your chances of landing an opportunity. Each time you mingle with employers, even in a semi-passive situation like attending a panel, you practice critical professional interaction skills that help you grow in comfort and confidence.

We offer programming each semester. Take a look at Handshake to RSVP for upcoming workshops and events.

Here are some tips for attending programs & events:

  • If you’re particularly interested in a speaker or organization, do some recon ahead of time. Read their web site, check for relevant news, search LinkedIn for profiles of WashU alumni that work there, and look to see if they have any positions posted in Handshake. These steps will give you context and enable you to make a good impression through comments or conversation – which can pay off if you reach out for a chat or apply for a position in the future.
  • Be aware of how you present. Aim to appear engaged and polished. You don’t need to be in business clothes for a panel, but it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. If the event is on Zoom, turn on your camera, sit tall, note what shows up in your background, make sure you have good lighting.
  • Think about how you’ll introduce yourself (if the moment presents itself or if you ask a question). Include your name and a bit about your interests, studies or experience. Then ask informed questions that showcase your curiosity or thoughtful consideration.
  • Be sure to write down names (including spellings), email addresses, websites or advice that you want to remember or refer to in a thank you email.
  • Don’t let questions or concerns stop you from attending! If you’d like advice from a Career Peer ahead of time, stop in to our office in DUC 110.Â
