What Do You Know For Sure?

You might feel like this time is marked by all of the things you’re NOT sure about. Exploration is, by nature, the act of traveling through unfamiliar territory in order to learn more. However, it’s a worthwhile exercise to consider what you DO know for sure. It might be more than you think. Making a list or journaling could provide you with some touch points that will guide your decision-making and make you feel more secure about where you stand.

Consider these questions related to the kind of work you picture yourself doing in the future:

  • Do you like the idea of working with people? information or data? ideas? things?
  • What skills do you most value and want to use?
  • Do you like the idea of working in-person? Remote? Hybrid?
  • Are you drawn to a large company with several locations and well-defined departments? Small organizations where you know everyone and have the chance to contribute in lots of ways? Something in-between?
  • Think about the kind of organization you might work for. Does it have corporate vibes? A creative atmosphere? Does it serve others directly or indirectly? Is it a business that serves other businesses? Healthcare related?
  • Do you see yourself living in a large city? A suburban environment? A more rural or spacious setting? Are there particular locations on your target list?
  • How do you imagine getting to work each day? Subway, walk, car, bus, train?
  • Are you invested in the idea of regular hours? Open to shifting schedules or push-seasons?
  • Can you picture yourself regularly traveling for work? Does the idea of staying home and near a support system appeal?
  • Do you picture yourself at a desk? In meetings? Up and about interacting with others? Presenting to a group? Providing expert information?
  • What values drive you? Work/life balance? Earning potential? Contributing to society? Personal meaning? Opportunity for growth or advancement? Stability? Innovation or entrepreneurship?

What is becoming more clear about your desires or goals?
