The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) co-sponsored a program with the Center for Career Engagement (CCE) to share timely information and answer questions about how international students can understand their work authorization options and discuss those options with potential employers. Gaby Renteria-Poepsel, Senior International Student Advisor and Ariel Carpenter, Associate Director of OISS joined Zhiling Xu and Eliza Angarano, both Assistant Directors for Career Development with the CCE.
Panelists shared insights about employment authorization, where to find updated information about immigration policies and updates, and how to answer the application question: “Do you now or will you in the future need sponsorship?” [Answer: It was recommended that students be honest in answering this question and reach out directly to the recruiter to specify their visa status – prior to applying, if possible.]
Panelists wanted students and partners to know that given the ongoing changes in the landscape for international students and employment, it is very important for students engage with their OISS Adviser, to better understand their status, compliance requirements while studying in the U.S., and available work authorization benefits.
For faculty and staff partners, Ariel Carpenter shared, “The immigration landscape is changing rapidly, but OISS will be a mainstay to guide the WashU community through each development. Please do not hesitate to connect with OISS if you, your students, colleagues or peers have questions!”.
