What is Experiential Learning?
Experiential Learning is an umbrella term for a type of education that integrates knowledge, action and reflection. It incorporates and emphasizes hands-on experiences where students can apply what they have learned in academic courses to real-world work and scenarios. Students learn by doing and then reflect on the experience. The WashU Center for Career Engagement believes that Experiential Learning provides students of all levels with the opportunity to:
- Understand academic material with greater nuance by applying technical knowledge to “real world” settings;Â
- Advance their post-graduation career outcomes by growing their network, building their resume, and gaining transferable skills from a professional setting; andÂ
- Deepen their personal career exploration and professional development by gaining new perspectives on their own skills, interests, passions, and values.
